Seaside
You can find some big and sandy public beaches with free access or even with bath establishments at 15 km only from Nozzano Castello.
The most famous seaside resorts of Tuscany are only 25 km from Lucca: Viareggio has lived its period of splendour in the Twenties and still offers some of its most beautiful hotels and Restaurants dating back to that period. The most beautiful boats of Italy are built in its shipyards. Forte dei Marmi is known as the VIP resort, and has the most beautiful shops and spectacular discotheques. Both resorts have large sandy beaches with typical bathing establishments, with tiny cabins, umbrellas and deck chairs.
Driving along the highway for 1 ½ hour you will reach the famous cost named Cinque Terre for its tiny 5 villages, situated on a rocky cost and surrounded by picturesque wine yards.
Lake
The small Lake of Massacciucoli, at 6 km only from Nozzano Castello, became a natural reserve and offers the possibility of bird-watching during guided tours. As well it gives the possibility to the less skilled to follow some sailing course before attempting the sea.
Mountains
A big part of the district of Lucca is formed by the Nature Park of the Apuan Alps and the Apennines with peaks that exceed 2000 meters above sea level. Green and rocky mountains invite hikers with well signed tracks and climbers to explore this region with its several natural attractions like the marble quarries of Carrara (look "Things to do") or the big stalactite and stalagmite cave "Grotta del Vento" (look "Things to do").
During the summer month it is possible to cross an imposing and spectacular calcareous stone gorge (Orrido di Botri) with steep walls that rise to a height of 200 metres, in some tracts only a few metres from each other. Deeply eroded over time by two torrents, they resemble a real canyon.
Spa location
Tuscany is, for its geological events and its orography a region rich of natural spas, characteristic that attracted the Etrurians already 3000 years ago. No wonder that a lot of spa towns have grown during the centuries on the major spas. Closed to Lucca (8 km) you find San Giuliano Terme, but better known are the Baths of Bagni di Lucca (24 km). During the 15th century the fame of its thermal waters and the level of its public baths were so high that they represented the sole Italian reality present in the European spa elite. Nowadays a modern thermal beauty centre propose special treatments that combine the ancient thermal values with more modern treatments.
Other important and well kown spa towns are Montecatini Terme (30 km) and Monsummano Terme (30 km). Montecatini enchant by its wonderful Liberty establishments from the twenties, while Monsummano has a unique and very big grotto with natural warm water vapour, rich of healthy minerals.
